Bodies After Birth: Postpartum Period Explained According To Ayurveda

Ayurveda states that the body is comprised of the five main elements that all physical matter is made of: water (jalam), earth (prithivi), air (vayu), fire (agni), and ether (akash). Individuals are born with certain dominant elements in their body (doshas); Vata dosha = air/ether, Pitta dosha = fire/water, Kapha dosha = earth/water. It is said that our physical and mental wellbeing is affected by doshic imbalances.

Regardless of their individual dosha, all postpartum women are affected by excess Vata. Some common symptoms of this include: trouble with sleep (extreme fatigue paired with insomnia), lightheadedness or headaches, reduced appetite, very dry skin, nails and hair, hair loss, swelling of limbs, constipation, impaired cognitive function, acne or other skin irritations, anxiety or other nervous system issues.

To rebalance doshas and have an optimal recovery period certain universal recommendations can be applied. Ayurveda recommends that all new mothers are given "warming" foods and beverages, such as turmeric milk. Ghee (clarified butter) should be used in every meal, along with certain spices and herbs that subdue vata while increasing the pitta dosha. Warming oils should be used on the entire body; extra pure cold pressed sesame oil is best.
